Talks for Photographers

I offer 16 talks on aspects of landscape, wildlife and night sky photography, all intended for specialist photographic audiences.

Each talk comprises approximately 150 high definition images and comfortably fills a two hour programme (inclusive of a 20 minute break midway).
I bring my own high definition digital projector. All my talks focus on showing great images as well as explaining the thinking and planning that went into them.
The fee per talk is £120, plus travel charged from Avebury at 45p/mile. All my presentations are also available by video link using Zoom, at the same fee with no travel cost.

By the Sea

Our coast is the spectacular wild edge of Britain. Fulfilling the tremendous photographic potential of beaches, cliffs, sea stacks, lighthouses, castles and storms requires effective use of seasonal light and tides. Photographic techniques discussed include using different shutter speeds, stitching panoramas and capturing high dynamic range. more

Landscapes for All Seasons

Seasonal change is an inspiration to landscape photographers. Spring wild flowers, summer harvest, autumn mist and winter snow transform the countryside from ordinary to exceptional. Exploring favourite locations throughout Britain to illustrate light and composition, the talk shows how to make the most of conditions, capture reflections and panoramas, use filters and explains techniques such as focus stacking. more

Wildlife for all Seasons

Exciting wildlife photographs do not require overseas travel! Featuring owls, kingfishers, puffins, hares, otters, seals and deer, this talk shows how, when and where to make striking images of iconic British species in the wild. more

Small is Beautiful

Macro photography opens up a fascinating world of wildlife, including many subjects close to home. This talk demonstrates techniques for making striking images of butterflies, dragonflies and other insects, orchids and fungi including composition, depth of field and controlling light, as well as how to find and identify the subject. more

NEW Patagonia and Penguins

Journey to the tip of South America through awe-inspiring landscapes of volcanoes, fjords and glaciers in search of guanacos, flamingoes and pumas. In the second half discover the extraordinary wildlife of the Falkland Islands such as elephant seals, albatrosses and penguins. This is nature at the End of the Earth. more

Photographing the Diversity of Mammals

Wild mammals are amongst the most challenging photographic subjects. Exploring some of the world’s top wildlife destinations in search of giant anteaters, gorillas, elephants, wolves, bears and big cats, get up close to create quirky and unusual images. more

Photographing the Beauty of Birds

The charismatic birds of cold oceans, tropical forests, wetlands and dry savannas are an inspiration to photographers. Ranging from penguins and albatrosses to hummingbirds and toucans, this talk demonstrates creative techniques for capturing the lives of birds. more

Winter Photography

Winter light, frost, floods, freezing fog, storms and snow present great challenges and opportunities for outdoor photography. Images of winter in Britain, Yellowstone, Arctic Norway and Iceland show landscapes transformed, wildlife spectacles unfold and capture the elusive beauty of the aurora borealis. more

Photographing Wiltshire

Wiltshire’s landscape encompasses quintessential scenes; whale-backed chalk hills, exquisite Cotswold villages, England’s finest landscape garden and quirky white horses, together with the world’s largest and most famous stone circles. There is much to delight the photographer here. Yet compared to other parts of the West Country, most of the county remains relatively little photographed. In this talk I will share its secrets. more

Jaguars and Giant Tortoises

South America has some of the world's most exciting wildlife destinations. Exploring Pantanal swamps, Andean cloud forests and Galapagos islands, this lecture describes techniques for photographing birds, mammals and reptiles in the continent's diverse tropical environments. more

In the Desert

Deserts offer photographers exquisite light and patterns. Extraordinary landscapes of dunes, canyons, mesas, arches and hoodoos are explored, along with ancient temples, fortresses, wildlife and the flowering of the desert. The talk covers using reflected light, high contrast, low light and imaging the night sky. more

Stumbling Around in the Dark

Digital photography enables us to capture the beauty of the night sky in unprecedented detail. In this evening of landscape astrophotography, I show how to use an ordinary digital camera to make stunning images of stars, planets, the Moon and the Milky Way, as well as more elusive astronomical phenomena such as meteors and comets. I recount travels in the arctic in search of the aurora borealis and across four continents to photograph total solar eclipses. more

NEW Shooting the Moon

Photographing the Moon in the landscape is harder that it looks. With examples from across Britain, Robert Harvey explains the planning and settings required, together with the opportunities created by monthly, annual and longer lunar cycles. Why is 2025 a special year for the Moon, what is a Major Lunar Standstill and was it significant to the builders of Neolithic monuments 5,000 years ago? more

NEW Which Lens for Which Landscape?

Landscape photography conjures up the thought of wide, sweeping vistas. Are wide angle lenses really most useful? This talk demonstrates the effective use of lenses ranging from long telephotos to fish-eyes and stitched panoramas to capture the most impact. more

Britain’s Best Landscapes and How to Photograph Them

Drawing on my recently published book of the same title, I ask how much of landscape photography is the result of planning and what is down to luck? I show how photographic vision can be realised by innovative composition and effective use of colour, light and weather. In the second half I look at developing a personal style and how my experience as a scientist influences my photography. more

The Art of Audiovisual

Digital audiovisuals are an ideal medium for presenting photography to an audience. With examples of the British coast and countryside, tropical wildlife and American landscapes, I demonstrate how to build a story in pictures and music. My final audiovisual asks "How Far Can You See?" and is literally out of this world. more
