DUNSTANBURGH CASTLE AT DAWN

Dunstanburgh Castle occupies a lonely crag overlooking a spectacular beach of wave-rounded dolerite boulders. In winter, the sun rises behind the castle as seen from this viewpoint, giving the possibility of a colourful sky. Dolerite is dark and needs to be wet in order to bring it to life. This visit to Northumberland was scheduled for a day on which high tide fell about two hours before sunrise, so the falling tide would leave wet rocks surrounded by softly flowing water towards the top of the beach.
