DUNSTANBURGH CASTLE
Situated on a lonely crag between Craster and Embleton, Dunstanburgh Castle has the most dramatic location of all Northumberland's castles. Although only a solitary tower is visible from the north, the viewpoint benefits from a beach foreground of wave-rounded boulders. As high tide turns these are left wet and reflective, whilst half an hour before sunset, the crag and tower are bathed in warm light. With the boulders in shadow at this time of day, three different exposures were required to capture the whole dynamic range. I used a four stop neutral density filter to give a 15 second shutter speed on the longest exposure, which has pleasingly smoothed out the waves to give a tranquil feeling to the scene.
