NESTING GANNETS

Ireland's Great Saltee Island is one of the most accessible gannet colonies, with the advantage that it can be visited until late evening. I made this image just after sunset with a wide angle lens to fill the foreground with gannets and include the gorgeous tones of the sky. Light was fading fast so I used fill-in flash to illuminate the nearest gannets and a careful balance between shutter speed and aperture to achieve depth of field, whilst keeping the gannets in flight acceptably sharp.
