Bedruthan Steps

Bedruthan Steps

Bedruthan Steps is a fabulous landscape on the North Cornwall coast, which I have found difficult to do photographic justice. I have had a composition like this in mind for many years but realising it required a high tide coinciding with sunset when thrift is in flower during May, along with good side-lighting and an interesting sky. Those conditions came together at the end of a day of persistent rain. It took me a while to find a composition I was happy with, featuring a huge sea stack as a focal point and an abundance of thrift. A neutral density filter enabled a 10-second shutter speed to smooth out waves pounding the beach below.
