Sky Pink and Sea Pink

Thrift (also known as sea pink) glowing as an awesome aurora borealis lit up the sky over the derelict engine house at Levant Tin Mine during my Milky Way and Cornwall Coast Photography Tour.

The Sun sent four huge coronal mass ejections hurtling towards Earth on 8 and 9 May, creating a severe geomagnetic storm when they arrived. The resulting collisions of solar charged particles with Earth's atmosphere created the strongest aurora for decades, with colour visible to the naked eye as far south as Cornwall. Sky 13 seconds at F/2 and ISO 1000 (for structure in the fast-moving aurora); foreground 2 minutes at F/5.6 and ISO 1000 (for increased depth of field).
