MILKY WAY, MARS AND METEOR
The Milky Way’s core comes into view, low on the southern horizon as seen from Britain, during the spring and summer months. Looking out to sea from the Dorset coast, the only light pollution is from a few ships in the English Channel. I made this image at 11.23pm in mid-August, when the sky had just become fully dark. Both the Milky Way and Mars, to its left, are bright enough to create reflections in the sea, which appears still in this 20-second exposure. A meteor, distinctly green in colour, streaks through the sky above the galactic core. Durdle Door and the beach are illuminated by stray light from Weymouth, some 15 km to the west.
