CRESTED HAWK-EAGLE
This crested hawk-eagle was sitting in a dead tree in Sri Lanka when I arrived in a safari jeep. I trained my telephoto lens on it, waiting for the moment of take-off. The image was made as it launched itself into the air, wings in torque to provide lift. Exposure was pre-set to F/8 to give depth of field for a bird edge-on and 1/1,600th second, despite which the beating wing tips are not quite sharp. I can live with that. A bright, overcast day provided good, even illumination with no harsh shadows.
F/8, 1/1,600th second, ISO 250
