ANDEAN EMERALD

This jewel-like hummingbird was visiting feeders in a relatively well-lit forest edge but the background was distracting. To overcome this, I placed an artificial background of naturally coloured card behind and to the side of the feeder. This provided a pleasing image but I could not use flash as it would have thrown the bird's shadow on to the card. Fortunately natural light was enough to lift the bird's plumage and put a natural catch light in its eye.
