COLD WAR MONUMENT, ORFORDNESS

Orfordness is a huge shingle spit on the Suffolk coast with a history of military research and development. The structure in this photograph, known as a "pagoda", was built to test explosives during the Cold War. Its massive walls and roofs were designed to contain any accidental blast. The moody sky seemed to suit the subject and I converted the image to monochrome to increase the feeling of desolation in this remote place.
