HORSESHOE BEND
Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River (Arizona) is a deeply incised meander, within which the river appears to perform almost a complete U-turn. I deduced that when the sun is above the horizon, part of the meander would always be in shadow, giving excessive contrast. Hence I walked up to this viewpoint in the dark to make my image before sunrise. The pre-dawn sky reflects soft, pink light onto all parts of the meander, giving an unusual colour tone to the whole scene. With my wide angle zoom at its widest (10mm) setting, I was just able to capture the whole meander and some foreground rocks to give a sense of depth and scale.
