DEAD VLEI

Dead Vlei in Namibia's Tsauchab River Valley lost its water supply some 700 years ago as a result of a migrating dune. The trees died and their skeletons stand preserved in the dry desert air. I selected my viewpoint for this image so all the trees were separated from each other. A 277mm telephoto lens has compressed perspective and made the trees appear close together. By placing my tripod low on the ground, the background is dominated by golden sand of the east-facing dune beyond, as it catches the rising sun.
