BRYCE AMPHITHEATRE IN WINTER

Bryce amphitheatre is an eroded plateau in Utah. At 2,500m above sea level, freeze/thaw action has shattered sandstone into fantastic shapes known as hoodoos. December snow gives a pleasing colour contrast with the sandstone. As the sun rises in the south-east, it first catches Sinking Ship Mesa in the background. The focal point of the image is a distinctive hoodoo towards the bottom left, lit by sunlight reflected from the east-facing amphitheatre wall below me, making it appear to glow as if lit from within.
