MUTE SWAN ON ICE

Ice presents birds with challenging conditions in which to take off and land. This mute swan successfully became airborne after a slightly undignified run across a frozen lake at Welney Wetland Centre in Norfolk. Bright, contrasty light on white feathers created an exposure challenge so I had locked in the correct exposure manually using a stationary swan to test it. I like the way the image captures a moment when both the swan's feet are off the ground.
