GREAT GREEN BUSH-CRICKET
Great green bush-crickets are Britain's largest species of Orthoptera and undeniably impressive insects. Having found a colony on Roundway Down in Wiltshire, which has a good west-facing aspect, I thought a silhouette of a cricket against the setting sun would make an impressive picture. I tracked one down by its song and placed it on a tall umbellifer stem. My 300mm telephoto lens was the best way to show both the cricket and the sun at good sizes in the frame. I focused on the cricket and exposed for the sun.
