MILKY WAY AND AURORA AUSTRALIS
With only 3000 inhabitants, the Falkland Islands enjoy some of the darkest skies in the world. However, only one of my 12 nights there was free of cloud and in late November, true darkness lasted only a couple of hours. I took the opportunity to make this image on Pebble Island, using a derelict house illuminated by my torch as foreground. The constellation of Orion is clearly visible over the house, with Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, slightly right of the image centre. The pale band of the Milky Way stretches diagonally to the right of Sirius and a faint green aurora australis lies close to the horizon.
