CRESCENT MOON OVER CLEVEDON PIER

Described by John Betjeman as “the most beautiful pier in England”, Clevedon is the only surviving Grade 1 listed pier. Constructed of 370 tonnes of wrought iron with cast iron piles and wooden decking, it was opened in 1869. An hour and a half after midsummer sunset, there was still enough light in the sky to show detail in the pier along with a two-day old crescent moon. Careful positioning placed the Moon beside the weather vane, almost as if the pier were an Islamic structure.
