GUANACO AND CHULENGO

The principal large herbivores of Patagonia, guanacos are wild members of the camel family, similar to the ancestors of domesticated llamas and alpacas. A young guanuco is termed a chulego. I photographed these two in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park, manoeuvring myself to a position where they would fill the frame with a 400mm lens and there was an attractive mountain backdrop, flecked with snow even in midsummer.
