BUTTERMERE AT DAWN
I arrived at this solitary silver birch tree on the north shore of Buttermere before first light in late October. It was overcast but the clouds were forecast to break around sunrise, giving the possibility of good colour in the sky. I composed with the tree close to the lowest point of the mountains on the horizon, which corresponds with the location of sunrise. The clouds were propelled by a brisk wind, so I waited for them to form a pleasing configuration around the tree. Although the surface of the lake was rippled, an 8 second exposure brought out a partial reflection of the mountains. The whole image is dominated by the restful pastel tones of a Lake District autumn.
