ZION CANYON

Zion Canyon (Utah) is cut by the Virgin River through Navajo sandstone. Running north-south, the canyon sides are well lit by morning and evening sun. On the evening of this image, the sky was overcast with dark cloud except on the western horizon from where the sun was shining, illuminating the east canyon wall. I selected a vantage point where the shadow of the west canyon wall would creep up the east side, creating a sandwich between two dark layers. The last few minutes of sun, reddened by earth's atmosphere, gave extraordinarily saturated colour to the sandstone.
