MARBLED WHITE AND MOON
There is only one evening of the year when Full Moon coincides with the flight period of marbled white butterflies. I captured this image on the Marlborough Downs as a single exposure in camera using a 300mm lens and macro twin flash to light the butterfly. It was tricky to get the camera in exactly the right position for the butterfly, which was waving around in a slight breeze, to be against the disk of the Moon. I also had to keep autofocus locked on the butterfly when it kept trying to wander 400,000 kilometres beyond it. The moon is far out of focus, which makes it appear much larger in the frame, enabling me to get the whole butterfly against its disk. I took 290 images with a success rate of less than 1%.
